2021 Forgeron Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon

What an arctic blast we have been experiencing the past couple days!  The low last night was -6 and the high today was barely above zero, so needless to say I have been huddled indoors.  But at least there is good food and wine to take a bit of the chill away and tonight I've opened a bottle of 2021 Forgeron Cellars Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon.  This wine is a 100% Cabernet sourced from the Minnick Hills Vineyard in the Walla Walla AVA of Washington.  So, let's see how this wine is tasting!

2021 Forgeron Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon

The wine is a bit lighter in body than your typical Cabernet, emblazoned with bright ruby color in the glass.  The nose presents welcoming aromas of leather, toasted oak and warm cherry pie that beckons you to take a sip.  That first sip is a rush of ripe blackberry, plum and cherry with a good bit of acidity, which transitions to some earthy notes of dusty loam, vanilla bean and dark chocolate midpalate.  The tannins are youthful but well behaved, providing for a lovely, smooth dry finish with just a bit of acidity at the end.

Pan seared bison New York Strip, oven roasted white and purple potatoes and steamed green beans almondine

Overall, I would rate this wine an 8.5, as it's a very nicely composed Cabernet that will likely improve a bit with some time in the cellar.  This wine would pair well with a variety of hearty winter dishes, from beef stew and braised short ribs, to baked pasta or risotto.  Tonight, I am enjoying this wine with a pan seared bison New York Strip, oven roasted white and purple potatoes and steamed green beans almondine.  Cheers!

2020 Anvil Syrah

Happy Sunday!  And since it's the last Sunday of the month, it's time for Dinner in the Diner, where I explore a recipe from the dining cars of some of the most famous passenger trains of the 20th Century.  So, what to pair with my dinner?  Tonight I've opened a bottle of 2020 Anvil Syrah, the premium label from Forgeron Cellars.  The 2020 vintage is a 100% Syrah from the Boushey Vineyard in the Yakima Valley AVA of Washington.  So, let's see what this wine has going on!

2020 Anvil Syrah

The wine is a deep garnet color in the glass, with moderate body and clarity, just what you'd expect from a nice Syrah.  The nose reveals aromas of blackberry, blueberry and eucalyptus with undertones of basalt minerality.  The first sip is a rush of sweet black fruit, blackberry, blueberry and currant that dance around a bit of cocoa powder and toasted oak midpalate, with a trail of black peppery spice.  The tannins are still a bit sharp, but still provide for a long, smooth dry finish that lingers until your next sip.

Individual deep dish chicken pie from the New York Central

Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 9, as it's just a wonderful example of a single-vineyard Syrah from one of the premier areas of Washington for production of this varietal.  This wine would pair well with a variety of fall dishes, from braised short ribs, to rack of lamb, earthy wild mushroom risotto to Beef Wellington.  Tonight, I am taking a road less traveled and enjoying this wine with a recipe from the diner on the New York Central, the individual deep dish chicken pie from the 20th Century Limited.  The recipes for the filling, crust and rich sauce (this is superb) are presented below (though to be fair, I substituted boneless chicken breast for the white/dark meat combination suggested).  Cheers!

2020 Forgeron Cellars Boushey Vineyards Syrah

Happy Sunday!  It cooled down a lot here overnight, so I'm ready to enjoy a nice red wine with my dinner (but don't worry, the summer of rose will continue!). Given my meal choice, I've opened a bottle from a recent wine club shipment from Forgeron Cellars, the 2020 Forgeron Cellars Boushey Vineyards Syrah from the Yakima Valley AVA of Washington.  So, let's see how this wine is tasting and whether I made the right choice for tonight's dinner pairing!

2020 Forgeron Cellars Boushey Vineyards Syrah

The wine is a bright ruby color in the glass, with great clarity, just as you'd expect from this varietal  A gentle swirl of the glass reveals aromas of leather, tart cherry, green grass and dried herbs, beckoning you to take a sip.  That first sip is a complex rush of fruit and mineral flavors, fresh strawberry and blackberry intermingle with tart cherry before transitioning to some tar and earthy peat notes midpalate.  The tannins are subdued, perhaps unnoticeable, as they provide the foundation for the long, smooth dry finish with a reprise of acidity at the end.

Pan seared salmon filed with risotto and steamed asparagus, along with Asian barbecue demi and edible flowers

Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 8.5 as it's just a classic expression of Grenache that would pair well with a variety of dished from the Mediterranean or any coastal clime.  This wine would be ideal with grilled white fish, shellfish salad or a light seafood pasta, but tonight I am taking a classic Pacific Northwest approach.  I am enjoying this wine with a pan seared salmon filed with some risotto and steamed asparagus, along with some Asian barbecue demi and edible flowers.  Cheers!

2021 Forgeron Barbera Barrel Select

Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there!  I hope you enjoyed a pleasant day with your families, as I have decided to make a special dinner on this hot summer evening, so I struggled with what wine to pair with it until I spotted a recent wine club shipment from Forgeron Cellars.  The 2021 Forgeron Barbera was crafted from select barrels of Barbera from the White Bluffs appellation in the Columbia Valley AVA of Washington.  Since the White Bluffs are located on a plateau that can extend the growing season by as much as 45 days over the surrounding areas.  With this classic varietal and the wine makers' commitment to the Piedmont style, this wine seems ideal for my Sunday dinner!

2021 Forgeron Barbera Barrel Select

The wine is a deep ruby color in the glass, with nice clarity, just as you'd expect from a nice Barbera.  A gentle swirl of the glass reveals aromas of leather, blackberry and peppery spice notes with undertones of lavender.  The first sip is like stepping into an Italian grocery, a rush of black cherry and blackberry fruit with ample baking spice and floral notes, that ease into some earthy mineral and peat midpalate.  The tannins are well integrated, as the acidity takes charge for a lingering dry finish.

Crab risotto garnished with sautéed garlic scapes and shaved parmesan

I would rate this wine a solid 9, as it's a very pleasing domestic example of this Italian varietal.  This wine would pair well with grilled steaks, lighter salad with broiled branzino, but tonight I am going more traditional with this wine.  I am enjoying this wine with a crab risotto garnished with sautéed garlic scapes and shaved parmesan.  The acidity of this wine is an ideal foil to the richness of the risotto.  Cheers!

2021 Forgeron Cellars Grenache

Happy Sunday!  I had a chance to do a little relaxing today, went out to see a movie in addition to doing laundry and a little office work, so now it's time for a nice Sunday dinner and glass of wine.  For dinner, it's the last Sunday of the month, which means it's time for "Dinner in the Diner" when I try a recipe that was once features on one of the classic passenger trains of the 20th Century.  But first, the wine.  Tonight I've opened a bottle of 2021 Forgeron Cellars Grenache, which is a 100% Grenache from the Boushey Vineyard in the Yakima Valley AVA of Washington.  So, let's see how this wine is tasting!

2021 Forgeron Cellars Grenache

The wine is an easy garnet color in the glass, just as you might expect from this varietal.  A swirl of the glass reveals aromas of blackberry, currant and a hint of mint over the top.  Take a sip and you're in for a rush of ripe fruit, cherry, currant and plum, that transitions to some notes of cinnamon and spice midpalate. The tannins are well integrated, providing for a lovely dry finish with some lingering earthy notes at the end.

Seafood Newburg with scallops, shrimp, mushrooms and peas

Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 8.5, as it's just a pleasant drinking, food friendly, lighter red wine ideal for the summer months (did I mention it was 82 degrees here today?).  Tonight, I am pairing this wine with a classic recipe from the dining cars on the Pennsylvania Railroad, Seafood Newburg!  It doesn't get much more classically 20th century than seafood in a sherry cream sauce!  I admit I took a few liberties with this recipe and added just scallops and shrimp, as that's what I had on hand, but I also added some peas to give it a little color as well.  The spice and tart fruit of this wine are a perfect foil to the richness of this dish.  Cheers!

2020 Forgeron Cellars Syrah

Happy Saturday!  It's been a half relaxing, but busy day, with shopping, errands and then a trip to the gym, and now I am making dinner before heading out to a new event in town that a friend of mine is putting on.  At least there is wine!  Tonight, I've opened a bottle of 2020 Forgeron Cellars Syrah.  This wine is composed of Syrah (94%) co-fermented with Viognier (6%) from the Boushey Vineyard in the Yakima Valley AVA of Washington.  Let's see how this wine is shaping up!

2020 Forgeron Cellars Syrah

The wine is a deep ruby color in the glass, perhaps somewhat heavier than you might expect from a Syrah.  A gentle swirl of the glass reveals aromas of plum, blackberry, black cherry and peppery spice with floral undertones of violet.  The first sip is a rush of wild flavors, black cherry and plum up front, intermingled with toffee, cocoa powder and oak, before heading back to some black pepper spice at the finish.  The tannins are velvety smooth, making a fine foundation for the long, smooth dry finish.

Crispy skin salmon, mushroom pasta and asparagus with hollandaise

Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 9, as it's just a very pleasant drinking Syrah and certainly not priced out of the range of most consumers.  This wine would pair well with a variety of dishes, from braised short ribs to rack of lamb, pork tenderloin to mushroom risotto.  Tonight, I am enjoying this wine with some crispy skin salmon, mushroom pasta and asparagus with hollandaise.  Cheers!

2019 Anvil Dionysus Cabernet Sauvignon

Merry Christmas!  I know it's only Christmas Eve, but I so love the Season that the joy is overflowing!  I hope that all of you and your families are enjoying a time together enjoying each other's company and realizing the true nature of this season as we think on the birth of Jesus as the savior we all need.  I confess that as much as I've tried to have traditions for this time of year, none of them have taken root, so what you see is what you get!  Tonight, as I make a wonderful Christmas Eve dinner, I've opened a bottle of the recent wine club selection from Forgeron Cellars, the 2019 Anvil Dionysus Cabernet Sauvignon.  This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (92%) and Petit Verdor (8%) from the Dionysus Vineyard in the Columbia Valley AVA of Washington.  So, let's see how this wine is shaping up!

2019 Anvil Dionysus Cabernet Sauvignon

The wine is a deep ruby color in the glass, just as you'd expect from a Washington Cabernet.   A gentle swirl of the glass reveals aromas of warm blackberry, plum, baking spice amid hints of oak in the background.  Take a sip and you're treated to a rush of cool ripe fruit, blackberry, cherry and plum that give way to some earthy mineral notes midpalate, before easing into some white pepper notes heading into the finish.  The tannins are well structured, providing for a nice base for the long, smooth dry finish that lingers until you take another sip.

Pan seared center cut prime ribeye, haricots verts almondine and a big baked potato

Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 9, as the Dionysus Cabernet is a perennial favorite of mine.  This wine is ideal for the winter months, as the hearty structure and ripe fruit make it perfect for the hearty dishes we all enjoy this time of year.  This wine would pair well with steak, lamb, hearty pasta dishes or rustic risotto.  Tonight, I am enjoying this wine with a pan seared center cut prime ribeye, haricots verts almondine and a big baked potato with all the trimmings.  Cheers!

2019 Forgeron Boushey Vineyard Grenache

Happy Sunday!  Today has been an adventure as I completed the sauce making endeavor by canning 13 quarts of fresh pasta sauce with roasted garlic and peppers, in addition to doing laundry and other sundry chores around the house.  So, I figure I've earned a nice glass of wine, and tonight that wine is the 2019 Forgeron Grenache, a 100% Grenache from the Boushey Vineyard in the Yakima Valley AVA of Washington.  This is Forgeron's second vintage of a pure Grenache (you can see my review of the first vintage here), so let's see how this second effort is tasting!

2019 Forgeron Boushey Vineyard Grenache

The wine is a bright ruby color in the glass, with a lighter body, somewhat reminiscent of a Pinot Noir.  A gentle swirl of the glass reveals aromas of cherry, plum and currant amid floral notes of lavender and a hint of minerality.  The first sip is a rush of ripe berry, that quickly evolves into sweetness and acidity coming to fisticuffs!  As these two settle down, the wine gracefully transitions to some mineral notes midpalate before easing into sweet cherry and white pepper notes on the finish, which is wonderfully smooth and dry.

Barbecued baby back ribs, corn on the cob and green beans

Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 8.5, as I wasn't quite as impressed with this vintage as I was with the inaugural, but it's still a wonderful representation of the varietal.  This wine would pair well with lamb, Yankee pot roast or summer barbecue, which is a good thing given my dinner selection.  Tonight, I am enjoying this wine with some slow cooked barbecued baby back ribs, corn on the cob and green beans, a perfect end of summer dinner!  Cheers!

2019 Forgeron Cabernet Sauvignon

Happy Sunday!  I feel like I got a lot accomplished this weekend as I managed to trim all the hedges yesterday before I had 16 people over for a cookout (and yes, my arms are really sore today, thanks for asking!).  Then today I finished the yard work with some mowing before easing into some dinner and wine.  Tonight I've opened a bottle of 2019 Forgeron Cellars Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon that I got in a wine club shipment last spring I think.  In any case, this wine is a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from the Minnick Hills and Seven Hills Vineyards in the Walla Walla AVA of Washington.  So, let's see how this wine is tasting!

2019 Forgeron Cabernet Sauvignon

The wine is a deep, inky purple color in the glass, a testament to a pure Cabernet.  Take a whiff and you're treated to a cascade of aromas of ripe blackberry and currant, intermingled with floral notes of lilac and classic dark chocolate that is such a tradition of Walla Walla Cabernets.  The first sip is a rush of ripe black cherry, blackberry and cassis that transitions well to some notes of dark chocolate and mocha midpalate, amid undertones of dusty minerality.  The tannins are a bit sharp early, but they open up nicely with some time, supporting the long, smooth dry finish.

Rare grilled porterhouse with roasted potatoes, poblanos and hatch chiles

Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 8.5 as it's a really pleasant drinking wine now, but I think it will improve markedly with a few more years in the cellar.  It's also a good value at just $35 before any club or case discounts.  This wine would pair well with a variety of late summer and early fall dishes, from grilled steaks and barbecue to eggplant parmesan or hearty beef stew.  Tonight, I am enjoying this wine with a rare grilled porterhouse, grilled poblanos and hatch chiles and some roasted white and purple potatoes.  Cheers!

2020 Forgeron Anvil "The Minnick" Proporietary Blend

Happy Sunday!  I spend much of the afternoon doing work (boo!), but now I am done and ready for a nice glass of wine and a wonderful Sunday dinner.  For my wine tonight, I've opened a bottle of a recent wine club selection from Forgeron Cellars, the 2020 Anvil "The Minnick" Proporietary Blend.  This wine gets its nickname from the Minnick Hills Vineyard where the grapes are sourced, in this case a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (38%), Malbec (18%), Cabernet Franc (16%), Petit Verdot (16%) and Merlot (12%).  So, let see how this wine is tasting!

2020 Forgeron Anvil "The Minnick" Proporietary Blend

The wine is a deep ruby color in the glass, a testament to the heavy Cabernet hand in the blend.  A gentle swirl of the glass reveals aromas of anise, lilac, cocoa powder and dusty limestone, a perfect beginning to usher you into the presence of this Walla Walla Bordeaux style blend.  Take a sip and be greeted by a rush of blue fruit, blueberry and currant that ease into some notes of caramel and baking spice midpalate.  The fine grain tannins are a perfect welcome to the smooth, long and exceptionally dry finish.

Pan seared filet mignon, with grilled pearl onions sautéed in butter and rosemary, mashed potatoes and steamed asparagus with hollandaise

Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 9, as I think it's quite a bit better than the past few vintages I've reviewed.  This wine would pair well with a variety of hearty meat dishes, from grilled lamb and veal, to hearty steaks and barbecue.  Tonight, I am enjoying this wine with a pan seared filet mignon, with grilled pearl onions sautéed in butter and rosemary, mashed potatoes and some steamed asparagus with hollandaise.  Cheers!

2021 Anvil Chardonnay

I am very happy to have a long holiday weekend as I feel like I've been working too much and haven't had a vacation yet this year!  So at least I can enjoy some nice wine and food this weekend, and tonight I've opened a bottle of a recent wine club shipment from Forgeron Cellars.  The 2021 Anvil Chardonnay is an old-vine Chardonnay sourced from the French Creek Vineyard's "Old Wente Block" which was originally planted in 1981 in the Yakima Valley AVA of Washington.  So, let's see how this wine is tasting!

2021 Anvil Chardonnay

The wine is a very pale golden color in the glass, a bit lighter than I would have expected.  A gentle swirl of the glass reveals aromas of pear, green apple, lemongrass and hints of white floral.  Take a sip and you're greeted with a rush of persimmon, pineapple and citrus, with buttery undertones, that ease into notes of pear and gradient minerals midpalate.  The finish is crisp and inviting, providing for a subtle dryness that will leave you reaching for more.

Seared sea scallops with linguine tossed with garlic scapes and broccoli rabe

Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 8.5, as it's a very different sort of Chardonnay, that portrays the crispness of a lighter white varietal, with the depth of flavor that can only come from old vine Chardonnay.  This wine would pair exceptionally well with summer seafood dishes, from light white fish, to shrimp, to chilled oysters.  Tonight I am enjoying this wine with some seared sea scallops along with linguine tossed with garlic scapes and broccoli rabe.  Cheers!

2018 Anvil Dionysus Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Happy Friday!  This is day 11 of my Christmas vacation (mental note to take more PTO throughout the year in 2023!) and after the blizzard that was a dud, I did some volunteer work this morning and am now ready to relax with a nice dinner and a glass (or bottle) of wine.  Tonight I've opened a recent wine club bottle from Forgeron Cellars, the 2018 Anvil Dionysus Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.  I've reviewed previous vintages, including the 2013201420152016 and 2017, so let's see what the latest vintage has to offer!

2018 Anvil Dionysus Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

The wine has the classic look and feel of a big, bold Cabernet in the glass.  Take a whiff and you're immersed in aromas of a classic college library with leather, dusty limestone, lavender and hints of pipe tobacco that practically beg you to take a sip.  The first sip is a rush of ripe black fruit, blackberry, cherry, plum and currant that transition easily to some tart pomegranate and cardamom midpalate.  The tannins are subdued, but well integrated, providing for a delightfully smooth dry finish that leaves you reaching for another sip.

Rare grilled filet mignon, topped with Béarnaise sauce along with some shaved Brussels sprouts with bacon, maple and pomegranate and a big baked potato

Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 9, as it's become a perennial favorite Cabernet from the Columbia Valley of Washington.  This wine would of course be great with big steaks and chops, roast lamb or braised short ribs.  Tonight, I am enjoying this with my Christmas Eve Eve dinner of a rare grilled filet mignon, topped with Béarnaise sauce along with some shaved Brussels sprouts with bacon, maple and pomegranate and a big baked potato.  Cheers!

2019 Forgeron Barbera

Happy Memorial Day weekend!  I spent a good part of the afternoon getting everything ready for summer, including setting up the patio dining area, putting out the wine drinking chairs on the front porch and setting up the new fire pit on the patio.  Needless to say, with the beautiful weather today, I think I might inaugurate my patio dining for the summer!  So, with all the dining, I've decided to open a recent wine club wine from Forgeron Cellars, the 2019 Forgeron Barbera from the Sagemoor Vineyard in the Columbia Valley AVA of Washington.  So, let's see how this wine is tasting!

2019 Forgeron Barbera

The wine is a deep ruby color in the glass with nice clarity.  A gentle swirl reveals aromas of cocoa, tart cherry and ripe black fruit with some earthy undertones.  Take a sip and you're first greeted with some ripe sweet cherry that transitions to some blackberry and boysenberry before easing into some earthy notes of basalt and peppery spice midpalate.  The tannins are a bit tightly wound, but still provide a solid base for a wonderfully long, dry finish that lingers for a minute or more.

Patio dinner of brats, sriracha slaw and corn on the cob!

Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 8.5, as it's a nice example of the varietal, offering a very easy going and food friendly wine.  This wine would pair well with a wide range of summer patio fare, from burgers and ribs to steaks or brats.  Tonight I am enjoying this wine with some classic beer brats along with sriracha slaw and some fresh corn on the cob!  Cheers!

2019 Anvil Boushey Vineyard Syrah

Happy Easter!  I started early this morning at church preparing breakfast for the 85 people in the choir and worship team, so needless to say I've tried to relax a bit this afternoon and that means making a non-traditional Easter "ham" and enjoying a nice glass of wine.  Tonight I've opened a bottle of the most recent Forgeron wine club shipment which arrived yesterday, the 2019 Anvil Boushey Vineyard Syrah.  This wine is a 100% Syrah from the Boushey Vineyard in the Yakima Valley AVA of Washington, so let's see how this is tasting!

2019 Anvil Boushey Vineyard Syrah

The wine is a deep inky purple color in the glass, just as you'd expect from a nice Syrah.  A gentle swirl of the glass reveals complex, earthy aromas of leather, graphite and some floral notes intermingled with a hint of cassis.  Take a sip and you're greeted by a rush of ripe blueberry, blackberry and currant that dance on your palate before transitioning to some dark chocolate notes midpalate.  The tannins are nicely integrated for the midrange, dry finish with a bit of tart cherry on the end.

Hickory smoked barbecued pork spareribs, with baked beans and sriracha slaw

Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 8.5, as it's a nice example of a solid Syrah, but the past two vintages have not been as solid as the 2016 or 2017.  This wine would pair well with a traditional Easter ham, lamb, or even a nice cedar planked salmon filet.  As I mentioned, I am enjoying this wine tonight with a non-traditional Easter ham, being some hickory smoked barbecued pork spareribs, along with some baked beans and sriracha slaw.  Cheers!

2018 Forgeron Cellars Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon

While most of the country was desperately spending money on holiday presents today, I decided to spend the entire day trying to finish the leaves in my yard, and though I made progress I did not finish (though my back may be telling me that I am indeed finished!).  So, now I'm ready for a nice dinner and a good bottle of wine.  Tonight I've opened a bottle of a recent wine club shipment from Forgeron Cellars, the 2018 Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon.  So let's see how this wine is shaping up!

2018 Forgeron Cellars Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon

The wine is a beautiful ruby color in the glass, with a bit of indigo at the center, just as you might expect from a quality Cabernet.  A gentle swirl releases aromas of black cherry, earthy graphite and hints of peppery spice.  Take a sip and you quickly realize the Bordeaux styling of this Cabernet with a rush of black cherry and currant at the outset, that transitions easily to some notes of cedar, dark chocolate and black pepper spice that has a nice bit of acidity at the finish.  The tannins are nicely integrated to give backbone to the lingering dry finish that will have you reaching for your next sip.

Thick cut ribeye steak grilled Pittsburgh rare along with some steamed asparagus with hollandaise

Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 9, as it's just a really nice example of they classic Walla Walla Cabernet.  This wine would pair well with a variety of hearty fall dishes, from braised short ribs to rack of lamb or hearty pasta.  The winery recommended pairing this wine with prime rib, which is ironic as I actually bought a prime rib roast and sliced it into some steaks since my local market didn't have any thick cut ribeyes!  That thick cut steak grilled Pittsburgh rare along with some steamed asparagus with hollandaise and a big baked potato make for a perfect dinner with this wine.  Cheers!

2018 Forgeron Malbec

Happy Friday!  I've been waiting for the weekend, though not to relax as I have a lot of leaf gathering yard work to accomplish over the next two days.  So, since it's dark by the time I'm done with work, I can't start early, so I may as well enjoy a bottle of wine before the hard work begins.  Tonight, I've opened a bottle from a wine club shipment I received today, the 2018 Forgeron Malbec, a 100% Malbec from the StoneTree Vineyard in the Wahluke Slope AVA of Washington.  So, let's see how this wine is shaping up!

2018 Forgeron Malbec

The wine is a deep, inky purple in the glass, with bright ruby along the edges, just as you'd expect from a nice Malbec.  A gentle swirl reveals aromas of smoke, ripe blueberry and currant, with undertones of leather and earthy limestone.  Take a sip and a wash of ripe fruit overruns your senses, blueberry, blackberry and currant that transition easily to some earthy mineral notes intermingled with espresso and white pepper, for an intriguing combination midpalate.  The tannins are supple and fully comfortable in a supporting role for the long, smooth dry finish that lingers for a minute or more.

Chorizo and black bean tacos

Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 9, as it's a Malbec that tastes and feels like something more than a Malbec.  This wine would pair well with a variety of rich and hearty fall dishes, from braised short ribs to linguine carbonara, as well as midweek easy dinners like pizza or burgers.  Tonight I am going with the latter and enjoying this wine with some chorizo and black bean tacos on corn tortillas and topped with lettuce, cheese, sour cream, avocado and fresh sliced jalapenos.  Cheers!

2017 Anvil Dionysus Cabernet Sauvignon

Well, today was just a marathon of yard work, collecting leaves, mowing and trimming hydrangeas, I am ready to relax!  So it's a good thing that I have a nice dinner to enjoy and a wonderful bottle of wine to help me enjoy the evening.  Tonight I've opened a perennial favorite Cabernet, but a new vintage that I received this week, the 2017 Anvil Dionysus Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from the Columbia Valley AVA of Washington.  So, let's see how this latest vintage is tasting!

2017 Anvil Dionysus Cabernet Sauvignon

The wine is a deep ruby color in the glass, just as you'd expect from a vineyard known for it's Cabernet.  A gentle swirl releases aromas of ripe red fruit, cherry, raspberry and currant with wonderful earthy aromas of cedar and oak that just take me back to the barrel room at Forgeron.  Take a sip and deep flavors of black cherry cola, anise and oak wash over your palate before transitioning to some earthy notes of dusty limestone midpalate.  The tannins are youthful and vibrant, which combine with the bright acidity to provide a wonderfully smooth dry finish that will leave you reaching for another sip.

Prime ribeye grilled rare with some grilled leeks, bacon roasted Brussels sprouts

Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 9, as it's a perennial favorite for Columbia Valley Cabernet that stacks up with the best of the Walla Walla Valley or Napa.  This wine would pair well with a range of dishes, from hearty fall stews to steaks and wild mushroom risotto.  Forgeron is always kind enough to provide a pairing recipe, and with this wine they offered a pan roasted duck breast with wild mushrooms, which is sure to please.  But tonight, I am enjoying this wine with a prime ribeye grilled rare with some grilled leeks, bacon roasted Brussels sprouts and a big baked potato.  Cheers!

2019 Forgeron Cellars Estate Cabernet Franc

Happy Sunday!  I spend a good portion of the afternoon volunteering to package meals for food insecure youth in the three counties surrounding where I live at Cultivate Culinary Food Rescue.  It was two hours of hard work to pack over a thousand meals, so at least there is that!  So now I'm ready for Sunday dinner and a bottle of wine, and I guess I'll make it a complete weekend of wines from Forgeron Cellars, as tonight I've opened the second wine from the recent wine club shipment, the 2019 Estate Cabernet Franc, which is sourced from the Equinox Ridge Vineyard in the Walla Walla Valley.  This is the first wine I've had from this vineyard, so let's see what it has to offer!

2019 Forgeron Cellars Estate Cabernet Franc

The wine has a deep inky center with deep ruby along the edges, as you might expect from the varietal.  A swirl of the glass releases aromas of blackberry and leather, with floral undertones of rose petals and lavender.  Take a sip and blackberry, plum, black cherry and currant wash over your palate, a scintillating combination of black fruit sweetness, that gives way to notes of charred oak and bright acidity midpalate.  The tannins are well structured to the long, smooth dry finish that will have you reaching for another sip.

Rare grilled bone-in ribeye with bacon roasted Brussels sprouts

Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 8.5, as it's a really well executed expression of this often overlooked varietal.  This wine would pair well with a broad range of hearty dishes, from lamb chops to steaks, roast beef to hearty vegetable stew.  Tonight, I am enjoying this wine with a rare grilled bone-in ribeye with some bacon roasted Brussels sprouts.  Cheers!

2018 Forgeron Zinfandel

Happy Saturday!  I apologize for the lack of posting last week as I had to be in Charlotte for work, so I     had no time for blogging (though I did have time for a few instagram posts).  So I'm back at it today, and just in time for summer to arrive.  After the arctic blast that had our lows at freezing or below over the past few weeks, this week we reached the upper 80s and I have been sweating nonstop for the past two days!  But at least with the heat it seems that it's finally time to barbecue, and what's better with barbecue than Zinfandel?  Tonight I've opened a bottle of a recent wine club shipment from Forgeron Cellars, the 2018 Forgeron Zinfandel, which is a pure varietal from the Alter Ridge Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA of Washington.  Let's see if this one is rib ready!

2018 Forgeron Cellars Zinfandel

The wine is a deep ruby color in the glass, just as you might expect from a nice Zinfandel.  A swirl of the glass and you slowly inhale to reveal aromas of boysenberry, raspberry and leather with undertones of dark chocolate.  Raise the glass and take a sip to have a rush of candied plum and cherries wash over your palate before easing into some earthy mineral notes and a touch of graphite at the finish.  The tannins are well structured providing for an added textural component to the long, smooth dry finish that will have you quickly reaching for another sip.

Smoked baby back ribs with South Carolina mustard barbecue sauce, baked beans and slaw!

Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 9, as it's one of the nicest Zinfandels I've had in quite some time.  This wine would pair exceptionally well with barbecue, from ribs and chicken to pulled pork and brisket, this one would do well.  Tonight I am taking a bit of a detour from our traditional rich midwest barbecue and enjoying this wine with some smoked baby back ribs finished with some South Carolina mustard barbecue sauce, along with some coleslaw and baked beans.  Memorial Day is next weekend, but I couldn't resist starting a week early!

2018 Anvil Boushey Vineyard Syrah

Happy Wine Wednesday!  It's finally beginning to feel like spring as it hit 84 yesterday and today we were in the upper 70s.  So it's definitely grilling and sipping wine on the patio weather finally!  Tonight I've decided to settle my Washington Syrah challenge obligation by opening a bottle of a recent wine club shipment, the 2018 Anvil Boushey Vineyard Syrah from the Yakima Valley AVA of Washington.  This particular vintage came from the Birdhouse block of the vineyard during a record hot vintage, so let's see how it's tasting.

2018 Anvil Boushey Vineyard Syrah

The wine is a wonderfully rich garnet color in the glass as you might expect from a nice Syrah.  A quick whiff and you're greeted by aromas of blackberry and currant, with undertones of beef and earthy mineral notes.  Take a sip and a rush of ripe black fruit washes over your palate, with blackberry, currant and cherry that ease into notes of dusty limestone midpalate.  The tannins are nicely structured, with a balanced acidity that ushers you into a smooth dry finish with hints of cocoa at the end.

Rare grilled porterhouse with grilled broccoli rabe

Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 8.5, as it's a beautiful example of a solid Washington Syrah with great curb appeal for a variety of dishes.  This wine would pair well with grilled lamb chops, venison or even a hearty pasta.  Tonight I am enjoying this wine with a nice rare grilled porterhouse along with some grilled broccoli rabe and a baked potato with sour cream and scallions.  Cheers!
