Happy Sunday! It's been a good day to stay indoors and watch old movies, as it's been cold and snowing/sleeting all afternoon. And given the melancholy weather, it also seems appropriate to enjoy a little comfort food for dinner, which is what I plan for tonight. But what wine to enjoy with this particular comfort food was a challenge, but one that I was up to when I got out a bottle of a recent wine club shipment from DaMa Wines, the non-vintage Cowgirl Blanc. This wine is a blend of Chardonnay (65%) and Viognier (35%) from both the Mill Creek and Sagemoor Vineyards in the Columbia and Walla Walla Valley AVAs of Washington. So let's see how this unusual evening of white wine progresses!
The wine has pleasant aromas of rich tropical fruit, mango, passion fruit and some apricot notes with some mineral notes over the top. The taste is more subdued tropical fruit on the outset, which seems more dominated by citrus notes and bright acidity, which easily transitions into some earthy mineral notes midpalate. The tropical fruit makes another appearance on the crisp refreshing finish, which is surprisingly long for a white wine.
Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 8, as you know, white wines are really not my thing, but I could easily see this wine as a Thanksgiving favorite. Tonight I am enjoying this one with my Mom's recipe for classic tuna noodle casserole, creamy goodness that of course is topped with crumbled potato chips, it doesn't get more comfortable than that. Cheers!

2015 Healy Rose
Happy Hump Day! It's been a busy week already as I was in Montreal and Toronto for work (but at least I was able to score a bottle of Niagara wine at the duty free shop, more on that in a future post) and now I'm home for a couple weeks. Tonight I went to the gym and now I'm ready to relax with a great bottle of wine, the 2015 Healy Rose, the latest signature wine from Doubleback, Drew and Maura Bledsoe's winery in Walla Walla. So let's see how this rose from the Columbia Valley stacks up!
The wine is a beautiful salmon color, with some orange tints. The nose presents aromas of strawberry, honeydew and some fresh spring floral notes. The taste is just wonderfully refreshing, with some lovely crisp fruit notes up front, strawberry and honeydew again, but then there is a lovely reprise of apricot on the finish that just makes this wine a treat, perfect for the summer that's barreling towards us!
Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 8.5, it's one of my favorites of the current crop of Roses from Washington, but unfortunately I only have one more bottle! Tonight I am enjoying this wine with some classic summer food, some fried chicken and biscuit with a bit of cole slaw, and of course once dinner is over, I'll be enjoying this one on the patio as the sun goes down. Cheers!

2007 Chateaux des Karantes Coteaux du Languedoc La Clape
It's a beautiful summer afternoon, so what better way to enjoy the day than to open a bottle of wine and start cooking? So that's exactly what I've done, and for tonight's festivities, I've chosen a bottle of Languedoc from one of my favorite winemakers in the region, Chateau des Karantes. As I've mentioned in the past, I met the winemaker at a tasting here in Grand Rapids in 2008 and I was so impressed with the wines I was an instant fan. The blending of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre (GSM) has become such a classic in my mind, even as it hasn't seemed to have surged in popularity like some wines.
The wine itself is a wonderful deep purple trailing to bright ruby along the edges. The nose is a delightful blend of fruit, ripe plum, red berries and apricot, layers with a bit of smoke that creates a wonderful reminiscence of the sweet smell of bacon to wake you up on a Saturday morning. The taste has some delicate fruit at the outset, transitioning to some licorice and dark chocolate midpalate. Despite how delicate the flavors can be at times, the wine has a lush, smooth finish that seems to last in the minutes!
Now I'll confess, it's been a bit harder to find wines from this Chateau at my usual wine hang-outs, but I happened up on a few bottles of this wine at a local supermarket. The great news was that it was market down to $22 (already an unbelievable bargain) and then with an extra 10% discount for buying 6 bottles, I had them for under $20! The drawback (if you can call it that) was that these bottles were actually signed by the wine maker for an even held a year or two ago, so I faced a dilemma. Do I save the bottle since it's signed or do I crack it open and drink it, sending the moment to the recycling bin? Well, I did what any good wine drinker would do, I bought an extra bottle, so I had one to save and one to enjoy with you tonight!
Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 8, it's definitely a step down from the Diamant (you can see my review of the '05 Diamant here), but still a wonderful example of the quality of the wines of the Languedoc region of France. And this seems to be a trend, just like last time, I am enjoying this wine with some chicken and veggies with a bit of Indian red curry over basmati rice. Yum! So if you happen upon a bottle, signed or not, I highly recommend picking one up!
