Happy Sunday! It's been a bit of a break today after a couple weeks of seemingly non-stop busyness, today I relaxed, did a bit of work and a lot of laundry and some de-cluttering around the house. So, as always I'm ready for a nice dinner and a glass of wine. Tonight I've opened a bottle of a recent wine club shipment from Forgeron in Walla Walla. I have a lot or admiration and respect for Marie-Eve and the wonderful wines she produces, and this one is no exception, the 2014 Walla Walla Merlot. This wine is 100% Merlot blended from the Birch Creek (75%) and Minnick Hills (25%) vineyards in the Walla Walla Valley AVA. So let's see what this wine has to offer!
The wine is deep, inky purple at the center with bright garnet along the edges, more similar to a fine Cabernet, but still quote fine for Merlot. The nose is a cascade of wonderfully earthy Bordeaux-esque aromas, leather, peat, tar and green grass intermingled with ripe blackberry and black currant. The taste is just beautiful as the silky smooth mouthfeel envelops your tastebuds with blackberry, cherry and floral notes before transitioning to dark chocolate and mocha notes midpalate. The tannins are balanced with wonderful acidity, providing for a luxurious, smooth and exceptionally dry finish that seems to go on and on.
Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 8.5, as it's just a pleasure to drink and quote frankly, one of the nicest Merlots I've had in quite some time. This wine is ideal for fall, and would pair quite well with steak, lamb and a broad range of stews. Tonight I am enjoying this wine with a rare grilled prime filet mignon, with some grilled asparagus and a bit ol' baked potato with sour cream and scallions. Cheers!

2013 Murphy-Goode Red Wine
Happy Saturday! It's been an odd day of running errands and not being able to do yard work as it can't seem to make up its mind whether it will rain or not. Well maybe I'll have better luck tomorrow. In the meantime, I've opened a bottle of wine to enjoy with dinner before heading out to enjoy a performance at the Elkhart Civic Theatre, tonight it's Disney's Beauty and the Beast. So the wine, this is a bottle I picked up at my local market for only about $8, so I figured it was worth a try. I think it's a blend of primarily Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah and some other red varietals from Sonoma, but I couldn't find the exact blend. So let's see how it tastes.
The wine is a nice garnet color in the glass and the nose exudes aromas of leather, cherries, oak and a hint of anise. The taste is a rush of warm, ripe fruit, cherry, plum, blueberry and a bit of raspberry that transitions to some mineral notes and earthiness midpalate. The finish is somewhat subdued, with mellow tannins providing for a silky mouthfeel on the smooth, dry finish.
Overall, I would rate this wine a solid 7.5, as it's a pleasant drinking everyday red wine and a terrific value if you can find it on sale for under $10. This wine would pair very well with burgers, pizza or barbecue, but I'm enjoying it tonight with an alder planked wild sockeye filet, potato puree and some fresh green beans almondine that I bought fresh today. The great cherry flavors of this wine make it ideal with a rich salmon. Cheers!

Snooth Vouvray Virtual Tasting
Tonight is a fun night since it's another Snooth Virtual Tasting! Tonight we are tasting the Vouvray wines of the Loire Valley of France. Tonight at my house we are tasting two lovely Vouvray wines, the first is the Brut Champalou Sparkling Vouvray and the second is the 2012 Domaine Vigneau-Chevreau Vouvray Sec, a dry still wine based on chenin blanc.
The first wine we tried was the Brut Champalou Sparkling Vouvray, very interesting nose, a little floral aromas, and a bit of iron and graphite. The taste is remarkably bright and crisp with some nice fruit and honey notes at the outset. The finish is really nice, and super dry, without the aftertaste that so often accompanies a sparkling wine. Overall I would rate this one a solid 8, as it's a wine that's a good value at $24 as it tastes like a much more expensive sparkler. I'd be very pleased to offer this to my guests as I did tonight!
The second wine was the 2012 Domaine Vigneau-Chevreau Vouvray Sec, a more traditional dry white wine based on the chenin blanc. This wine has some nice fruit up front some citrus and melon aromas, along with a bit of green grass and herbs. The taste is so interesting, with a great silky mouthfeel and so much flavor that it keeps evolving in your mouth. There is a good bit of minerality, it's so smooth and complex rather than crisp like the sparkler, a truly wonderful white wine that would go beautifully with a lovely mushroom risotto or some rich buttery cheeses. Overall I would rate this wine a solid 8.5 and a terrific bottle for just $21!
So there you have it, our Snooth.com Virtual Tasting of Vouvray, a big shout out and thank you to Snooth and the wines of the Loire Valley! Cheers!
